Honour based abuse


Honour based violence (HBV) is a form of domestic abuse which inflicted in the name of ‘honour’.

The honour code is when someone does not abide by the ‘rules’, and are punished for bringing shame on the family.

Violations may include a woman having a boyfriend, rejecting a forced marriage, pregnancy outside of marriage, interfaith relationships, seeking divorce, inappropriate dress or make-up and even kissing in a public place.

Crimes of ‘honour’ do not always include violence. Crimes committed in the name of ‘honour’ might include:

  • domestic abuse
  • threats of violence
  • sexual or psychological abuse
  • forced marriage
  • being held against your will or taken somewhere you don’t want to go
  • assault
